When it comes to roof coatings, acrylic, silicon, and elastomeric tend to be the most popular. What’s the difference you ask?
3 Common Types of Roof Coating
Acrylic – Referring to 100-percent acrylic, this type of coating is well known for its UV-reflective qualities and resistance to hail damage. Some studies have even shown acrylic can reduce surface temperatures by as much as 20 degrees when exposed to direct sunlight (in 85+ degrees). Not being able to withstand pooling water is where acrylic falls short.
Elastomeric – Often referred to as the stronger version of acrylic, and some even contain acrylic, elastomeric is thicker and tends to last longer. It’s best against harsh elements and is great on a variety of exterior surfaces including stucco (which it is primarily made for), concrete, masonry, and even wood and log siding.
Silicone – This coating has gained market share in the commercial roof market in the last decade, primarily due to the material’s ability to withstand long-term exposure to puddling water. Silicon does attract dirt, so proper cleaning is expected to maintain its reflective properties.
